I was 1400 online 4 years ago, now I'm easy 2300+ 😎 Just study every day and you will see improvement! I did hit a plateau around 2100-2200 online blitz for a long time. Here are some tips that helped me
1) Pick an opening and learn it deep (don't just memorize lines, also go thorough GM games. Also play some blitz games so you can get more experience with the line.
At the 1400 level I recommend learning the London system at first (despite what people say about it!) The plans are simple and it works... Just maybe not against everything. Penguingm1 and Magnus Carlsen use the London system alot. I think the London system is good for middle games as well since it's all about preventing your opponent's ideas, control on the e5 square, etc. Positional stuff
2. Tactics, Calculation
People say use CCT but here's my order
a) Check/Checkmate
b) Moves that threaten Checkmate
c) Captures
d) Threats
Adding that 2nd step can help save a lot of time when solving the harder tactics
3. Silman books, Imbalances and Endgame
These helped me improve a lot at the 1900-2100 level. Great for middle game and endgame study
4. Analyze you games, especially your losses
First go through the game. If the game goes wrong, try to identify where it started to go wrong and understand why. It could be you allowed a Bg4 pin and you needed to play a preventable h3 move earlier. Just an example
Then go through with lichess or chesscom analysis and play through the "learn from your mistakes." I think that helps a lot. It's easy to get sucked in and play hundreds of blitz and bullet games, but learning from your mistakes and how to punish your opponents mistakes is what chess is all about.
5 General stuff:
If you trade a lot of pieces, the position becomes more and more like a draw. Generally If you have more space don't trade pieces, less space trade pieces. Try to keep more pieces on the board for more winning chances.
Stay solid to minimize your weaknesses. That's why the the triangle pawn structure c3-d4-e3 is is great, lends itself to be very solid.
Don't automatically recapture trades. Often there is an important inbetween move that is actually the best move.
Practice blindfold to increase visualization. Start less pieces on the board. I.e standard setup but with only knights, or bishops. Then slowly add pieces until you can visualize all pieces and entire board in your head. This will help you see stuff faster. Takes a lot of training tho, I'm still working on this
In bullet chess, change up openings if you can tell you opponent is starting to figure out your tricks. Play faster then them in the opening and flaggg them with knight and rook checks in the endgame 🤪
Play "guess the move" on chesscom 2600+ blitz opponents and learn how they play.
Train vs a computer ...sometimes. It's good to expose your weaknesses but it can be super frustrating to play against lol
Don't get a chess coach, they just want your money. 🤑 Everything is already on YouTube and the internet
Only study chess 1 hour a day. Don't study like 8 hours in a row or you'll get burned out. Better to have less but more diligent study time in
Those are some tips, hope that helps gl!
